Walk the line

This weekend our walking club (me, Acres, Humpers & Terry, + on this occasion, Alison) took on the challenge of 'The Fairfield Horseshoe' out of Ambleside in the Lakes. 10 miles long, climbing 3200 ft with great views.

The highlight of the walk was when we encountered a patch with a big sign "Warning: Deep Bog". Acres' initial relief was misplaced when he discovered they meant a muddy field. Terry decided to test just how deep, by walking out onto a patch of mud that looked a bit wet. The next thing we knew, he was letting out a startled yelp as he sank deeper into the bog. As his knees disappeared under the surface, I ran over to haul him out and save his life to make him forever in my debt. (Okay, maybe I'm exaggerating a little...) He was actually sinking fairly quickly - would have been fun to see just how far he could have gone! As you can see from these pics, he ended up covered upto his thighs. He then rolled around in some grass to wipe it off. Classic - almost Lunt-esque.

For my part, I'd bought some new walking shoes that I discovered were too tight and played hell with my fragile toes - a painful descent. Dave kindly brought a bottle of Spanish red to wash down the butties and Sports Mixtures - always prepared.

After the walk we enjoyed the hostelries of Ambleside, despite the thrash metal/80s compilation on the jukebox. Humpers proved that his Cambridge education hasn't gone to waste displaying knowledge across a range of obscure subjects on the quiz machine. Fine times.

I was a little confused to hear of Acres on a 10 mile walk, until the revelations of the red wine stashed in his napsack.
